Hexagon paper to print
Hexagon paper is a lattice of regular hexagons rather than squares, which is why chemists draw ring structures on it and why a tabletop map uses it: every neighbour is the same distance away. These are 5 mm on a side, small enough to fit a six-ring chain across the page.

How to use hexagon paper
A lattice of regular hexagons rather than squares. Every cell has six neighbours, all exactly the same distance away.
Step by step
- 1For chemistry, draw on the lines. A hexagon is a benzene ring at the size the paper already is, so a ring structure traces the grid and fused rings share an edge without any measuring.
- 2For a map, draw in the cells. Each hexagon is one tile of terrain. Hexes are used instead of squares because moving diagonally across a square grid is further than moving straight, and on a hex grid every step is equal.
- 3Number the columns before you fill it in. A hex map is much easier to reference later if the columns are lettered and the rows numbered, and it takes a minute at the start.
- Why the lattice looks offset
- Hexagons cannot stack in straight rows, so every other column sits half a cell lower. That offset is what gives each cell its six equal neighbours.
- Good for
- Organic chemistry, tabletop maps, quilting and tiling patterns.
