Free printable Word wheel with answers
A word wheel is eight letters, one in the centre and seven around the ring. You make as many words as you can, each using the centre letter and only the wheel letters, each letter once. One word uses all eight.

Difficulty is the shortest word that counts: an easy wheel takes three-letter words, an expert one only the longest. Start generous and work up.

The same wheel, set for a particular reader: short words for children, or a roomy large-print wheel.
A complete word list, every time
What makes a word wheel book worth printing is the answer most sellers cannot give: the complete list of words, not a sample. Every wheel is built from a real eight-letter word and its full word list is read from a dictionary, so the answer page is exhaustive. The eight-letter word is called out in bold.
How to solve a word wheel
Eight letters sit on the wheel, one in the centre. Make as many words as you can, each using the centre letter and only the wheel letters, each letter once. One word uses all eight.
The method
- 1Start with the centre letter. Every word must include it, so write it down and try the outer letters around it one at a time.
- 2Work up by length. Find the short words first, then stretch them: add a letter, swap an ending, and keep the ones that read.
- 3Hunt for the long one. One word uses all eight letters. Look for a common prefix or suffix, then fit the rest around the centre.
- 4Check against the list. The answer page prints every word you could have found, so you can see how close you came.
- The one rule
- Every word uses the centre letter and only the wheel letters, each letter at most once.
- What the answer page shows
- The complete word list is printed at the back, with the eight-letter word in bold.
- How the grades differ
- Harder grades raise the shortest word that counts.
- Good for
- Solvers who like word building and a target to beat.
