Free printable Number pyramid with answers

A number pyramid is a triangle of bricks where each brick equals the sum of the two directly beneath it. Fill the blanks by adding upward where two bricks are known and subtracting downward where a brick and one neighbour are. Every puzzle here has exactly one completion.

By size

Height is what makes a number pyramid harder: a taller pyramid has more bricks, and revealing fewer of them (or revealing upper bricks) means more add-and-subtract steps. Start on 3 rows and work up to 6.

By audience

A short pyramid with more bricks given uses the same rule, as a gentle introduction for a child or a beginner.

One answer, every time

The thing that makes a number pyramid book worth printing is the guarantee most sellers cannot make: that the revealed bricks fix exactly one completion. Every puzzle is generated by building a pyramid and revealing a set of bricks that pins the bottom row to one solution, proven before it prints. The filled pyramid prints as the answer key.

How to solve a number pyramid

Fill every brick so each one equals the sum of the two bricks directly beneath it, working up to the single brick on top.

The method

  1. 1Add upward where you can. When two side-by-side bricks are both filled, the brick resting on them is just their sum.
  2. 2Subtract downward where you can. If a brick and one of the two beneath it are known, the other one below is the brick minus the known neighbour.
  3. 3Chase the forced bricks. Each number you fill unlocks its neighbours. Keep alternating add-up and subtract-down until the pyramid is full.
  4. 4Check the top. The apex equals the sum of the whole bottom row by its weights, so a correct bottom row always lands on the printed top number.
The one rule
Every brick is the sum of the two directly below it.
What the answer page shows
The fully completed pyramid is printed at the back.
How the grades differ
Taller pyramids with fewer revealed bricks need more add-and-subtract steps to finish.
Good for
Early arithmetic practice and anyone who likes a quick logic warm-up.
