How to make a Straights puzzle
- 1Pick a difficulty. Choose a grid size. Larger grids give the logic more room, so they take longer to solve.
- 2Generate the puzzle. Press Generate puzzle. You get a fresh grid, proved to have exactly one solution.
- 3Print the two pages. Press Print / save PDF. You get two pages: the puzzle on page one and its answer on page two.
How to solve straights
Fill the white cells so every row and column holds distinct digits, and each run of white cells between the black cells is a set of consecutive numbers.
The method
- 1Spot the runs. The black cells split each row and column into runs. A run of three white cells holds three consecutive numbers in any order.
- 2Use the length. A run of length L can only hold numbers within a window L wide, so its highest and lowest digits are L apart.
- 3Respect the whole line. Digits never repeat across a full row or column, and a black clue digit is excluded from the white cells of its line.
- 4Narrow the windows. A given digit fixes a run’s window. Cross rows against columns until each cell has one option.
- The one rule
- Distinct digits per line, and each run a set of consecutive numbers.
- What the answer page shows
- The completed grid is printed at the back.
- How the grades differ
- Bigger grids bring longer runs and fewer givens.
- Good for
- Solvers who like sudoku with a twist.
