How to make a number pyramid

  1. 1Pick a difficulty. Choose a height from a gentle 3 rows up to a 6-row pyramid. Taller pyramids with fewer given bricks take more steps to finish.
  2. 2Generate the puzzle. Press Generate puzzle. You get a pyramid with some bricks filled in. Every brick is the sum of the two beneath it, and each puzzle has exactly one completion.
  3. 3Print the two pages. Press Print / save PDF. You get two pages: the puzzle on page one and the completed pyramid on page two.

How to solve a number pyramid

Fill every brick so each one equals the sum of the two bricks directly beneath it, working up to the single brick on top.

The method

  1. 1Add upward where you can. When two side-by-side bricks are both filled, the brick resting on them is just their sum.
  2. 2Subtract downward where you can. If a brick and one of the two beneath it are known, the other one below is the brick minus the known neighbour.
  3. 3Chase the forced bricks. Each number you fill unlocks its neighbours. Keep alternating add-up and subtract-down until the pyramid is full.
  4. 4Check the top. The apex equals the sum of the whole bottom row by its weights, so a correct bottom row always lands on the printed top number.
The one rule
Every brick is the sum of the two directly below it.
What the answer page shows
The fully completed pyramid is printed at the back.
How the grades differ
Taller pyramids with fewer revealed bricks need more add-and-subtract steps to finish.
Good for
Early arithmetic practice and anyone who likes a quick logic warm-up.

Questions

What is a number pyramid?
A number pyramid (or addition pyramid) is a triangle of bricks where each brick equals the sum of the two directly beneath it. You fill the blanks by adding upward and subtracting downward until the whole pyramid is complete.
Is this number pyramid generator free?
Yes. Pick a difficulty, generate a puzzle and print the pyramid plus its answer, with no sign-up and no watermark. It is free for classroom, home and personal use.
Does every puzzle have one solution?
Yes. Every puzzle is generated and checked by the same engine our Publisher Studio uses, so the given bricks fix exactly one completion. A puzzle is never ambiguous or unsolvable.
Does it include the answer?
Yes. Every puzzle prints as two pages: the puzzle on page one and the completed pyramid on page two, so you can check your work.
What size are the pages?
The free tool prints at 8.25 by 11 inches, a popular large-print size. Our Publisher Studio will export the same book at any KDP trim, from 5.06 by 7.81 up to 8.27 by 11.69, as a print-ready 300 DPI interior.
