How to use Cornell notes
A page split into three: a narrow cue column on the left, a wide notes area on the right, and a summary strip along the bottom.
Step by step
- 1Take notes in the wide column. During the lesson or reading, write in the large right-hand area only. Keep it to the main points.
- 2Add cues on the left afterwards. Later, write questions or keywords in the narrow left column that match the notes beside them.
- 3Summarise at the bottom. In the strip along the foot, write one or two lines that capture the page. Cover the notes and answer the cues to revise.

- The cue column turns your notes into a self-test, which is why Cornell paper beats plain lines for study.
