Coordinate grid paper to print

Coordinate paper is graph paper with the axes already drawn and numbered, so a plot starts at the point rather than at ruling the lines. The axes cross in the middle of the page, giving all four quadrants, and the numbers run every fifth square in both directions.

Paper size

One page at the size you choose. The rules are 0.6 pt and mid grey, so they print clearly and sit behind your handwriting. The same engine draws every page of a bound journal in our studio.

How to use coordinate paper

A 5 mm grid with the x and y axes already drawn and numbered through the middle, giving all four quadrants.

Step by step

  1. 1Read across, then up. A point is written (x, y): along the horizontal axis first, then the vertical. Reversing them is the commonest mistake in the whole topic.
  2. 2Mind the negative quadrants. Left of the vertical axis x is negative; below the horizontal axis y is negative. The numbers are printed on all four sides so you do not have to count back from the origin.
  3. 3Plot the points, then join them. Mark every point before drawing anything through them. A line drawn as you go hides a point that does not fit, which is usually the one worth noticing.
The axes are on a grid line, not between two
That is deliberate: it means every square is a whole unit in each quadrant, so counting from the origin gives whole-number coordinates.
Good for
Maths homework, plotting graphs, geometry and data by hand.
