Word search books for kids on KDP: what sells
The Once Books team · 13 October 2026 · 6 min read
A kids word search book and an adult one are not the same product with a different cover. A child scans differently, reads fewer words, and gives up faster, so the choices that make an adult book good make a kids book frustrating. You're building for a shorter attention span, not a bigger challenge. Get the format right for the age and they'll sell well on Amazon KDP, mostly as themed and gift-able sets.
Pick an age, then build for it
"Kids word search" is too broad. A four-year-old and a ten-year-old want different books. Narrow it: a first word search for ages 4 to 6, an animals word search for 6 to 8, a dinosaurs or space set for 7 to 10. The age decides every other choice below, and a title that names it ("First Word Search, Ages 4-6") sells better than a vague one.
Big grids, few words
The instinct to pack value in is wrong here, and it's worth resisting. A young child needs a roomy grid with six to eight words, not a dense one with twenty. Fewer words on a bigger grid means larger letters and more white space, so a word stands out instead of melting into a wall. In the free generator, the largest-print grid with a short list is the kids setting.
Across and down, not diagonal
This is the single biggest difference from an adult book. A young child scans left to right and top to bottom; a word hidden on a diagonal or spelled backwards reads as "not there" and ends in tears. Start with across-and-down only, add downward diagonals around age seven, and save reversals and full eight-direction grids for eight and up. Our generator's Easy grade already hides words across and down with light camouflage, which is the right starting point.
Themes do the selling
Children pick a book by what it's about. A themed set (ocean animals, trucks, princesses, the solar system) is far easier to find and gift than "100 Word Searches for Kids." The word list is the theme, so you control it: paste the words a child that age knows, keep them short, and skip anything they can't read yet.
Make one, then make the book
Try a themed grid in the free word search generator to see the size and spacing before you commit. When it looks right, the KDP word search maker builds a whole book of them, graded and themed, at any KDP trim, with an answer section, as a print-ready PDF. The full walkthrough from niche to upload is in how to make and sell word search books on KDP.

Questions parents ask
- Do kids word search books sell on Amazon KDP?
- Yes. Children's activity books are a steady KDP niche, especially themed sets (animals, space, dinosaurs) and gift-able titles. The books that sell are the ones clearly built for a child: big grids, short words, no diagonals.
- What age is a word search good for?
- Around five and up, once a child can scan a line of letters. For the youngest, hide words across and down only; add diagonals and reversals from about eight, when scanning in more directions is part of the fun.
- How many words should a kids word search have?
- Six to eight on a big grid for young children, up to twelve for older ones. The grid should feel roomy, not packed, so a child can find a word without hunting through a wall of letters.
