Why AI art usually isn’t print-ready, and how we fix it

A picture that looks crisp on your phone can still be unusable in print. Screens forgive things paper doesn’t: low resolution, no margin for trimming, colours that only exist in light. “Print-ready” is a specific bar, and most AI tools don’t clear it. Below is what that bar involves.
Resolution the page can survive
Print needs far more detail per inch than a screen. An image that fills a laptop can look soft or pixelated once it’s a physical page held a foot from a child’s face. Print-ready output has to carry enough resolution for the finished page size, not the preview.
Room to trim
Printed books are cut to size after printing, and the cut is never pixel-perfect. Artwork meant to reach the edge has to extend past it (the bleed) so a slightly off cut doesn’t leave a white sliver. Art generated for a screen has no such margin, so it fails at the trimmer even when it looks perfect on a screen.
Consistency that holds at print size
Drift you’d shrug off on a thumbnail is glaring on a printed spread. It’s why the same Consistency Engine that keeps a character recognisable matters for print in particular. A keepsake gets read a hundred times, up close.
How Once Books exports it
Every book exports as a high-resolution PDF sized for printing, not a screen-only preview, so you can send it straight to a print-on-demand service (and order a hardcover from us once print editions launch). It’s the difference between a nice picture and a book that arrives right. Authors self-publishing lean on this most, and it’s built into every plan on the pricing page. If you’re weighing that against hiring someone, here’s what a children’s book illustrator costs.
Questions parents ask
- Why doesn't most AI art print well?
- Screens forgive what paper doesn’t: low resolution, no bleed margin for trimming, and colours that only exist in light. Print needs far more detail per inch, and artwork that extends past the trim edge.
- What format does Once Books export for printing?
- A high-resolution PDF sized for the finished page, with bleed when you export for a print target, ready to send to a print-on-demand service. You'll also be able to order a hardcover from us once print editions launch.
- Can I print the PDF myself?
- Yes. The export is a standard high-resolution PDF, with bleed when you set it up for a print target, so you can send it to any print-on-demand service or a local printer. You can also order a hardcover from us once print editions launch.
