Dated or undated? Which planner to publish
The Once Books team · 22 September 2026 · 6 min read
A planner has a shelf life that a journal does not. A dated 2027 weekly planner is worth something in November 2026 and nothing in April 2027. An undated one is worth the same in both months. That single fact decides most of the strategy, and the usual answer is not to choose.
What dated planners give you
The seasonal search. From September to January, shoppers type the year. "2027 weekly planner" is a phrase with a curve: near zero in summer, a wall in December, gone by March. A dated planner listed in time rides the whole wall; a listing that goes live in February misses it.
The obvious title. The year in the title tells the buyer everything. It also tells Amazon's and Etsy's search everything, which is why dated planners rank quickly against generic ones in season.
No work for the buyer. Every week is labelled, every month has the right number of days, the first of the month lands on the right weekday. A buyer who wants to open the book and start writing wants dated.
What dated planners cost you
A four-month sales window. Roughly: list in September, sell through January, tail off through March. Then the listing is dead until you publish the next year's edition, which is a new listing with zero reviews.
Every review restarts. The 2027 edition's reviews do not carry to the 2028 edition. A dated series never accumulates the social proof an undated listing does.
A deadline. Miss September and the book earns a fraction of its potential. That is a real constraint on a catalogue of many titles.
What undated planners give you
A listing that compounds. The same ASIN sells in 2027 and 2029. Reviews, rank and the "customers also bought" links all accrue to one page.
No deadline. Publish in May and it sells in May.
A buyer who starts any day. Nothing is wasted if they start on the 14th of March or skip a fortnight. That is the undated planner's own selling point and worth stating in the listing.
What undated planners cost you
No seasonal wall. They sell steadily, but they never get the December spike.
Work for the buyer. Every date is written by hand. Some buyers like that; many do not, and a share of them buy dated instead.
A weaker title. "Undated weekly planner" is a generic phrase competing with thousands of listings, so the audience in the title has to do the ranking work: "undated weekly planner for nurses", "undated teacher planner".
The numbers behind the decision
The interior is the same size either way, and so is the print cost. A calendar year as a week on two pages compiles to about 150 pages: 53 week spreads, 12 month spreads, a year at a glance, goals and front matter. A page-a-day planner for a year is about 400 pages, which crosses two gutter thresholds and costs more than twice as much to print, so it needs a higher price and a buyer who wants a page a day.
Dated planners have one extra number: the date range. A calendar year is the default, an academic year runs August to July, and an 18-month planner from July to December sells to people who buy in summer. The studio compiles any range, and the same plan re-compiles for next year by changing two dates.
Publish both from one plan
The layout, the extras and the look are the same book either way; only the date supplier changes. So the working strategy is:
- Build the plan once: weekly or daily, Monday or Sunday start, year at a glance, goals, habit trackers, notes pages.
- Publish the undated edition first. It starts accruing reviews immediately and never expires.
- Each September, switch dating on, set next year's range, and publish the dated edition with the year in its title. It rides the seasonal wall and links to the undated listing.
- Next September, change two dates and do it again.
The planner maker compiles the same plan dated or undated with one switch, opens every month and week spread on a left-hand page, and exports the interior and cover at any KDP trim. Print one month free from the printable calendar to see the grid before you build the year.
The interior rules that apply to both editions are in journal and planner interior specs.

Questions parents ask
- When do dated planners sell?
- From September to January, with the peak in December. A 2027 planner listed in September 2026 gets the whole season; one listed in February 2027 gets almost none of it, and is worthless by April.
- Do undated planners sell?
- Yes, steadily and all year, but without the seasonal spike. Their advantage is that a listing keeps its reviews and its rank for years instead of restarting every January.
- Can I publish both from one design?
- Yes. In Publisher Studio the same layout compiles dated or undated with one switch. Publish the dated edition each autumn with the year in its title and keep the undated edition live all year.
