Questions, answered plainly
Straight answers to the questions people ask before making a personalised book: cost, safety, timing and printing.
How many photos do I need to upload?
You can upload from one to eight photos. Three to five clear, well-lit, face-forward photos of your child work best; a few good ones beat a big pile of blurry shots.
How many puzzles should a crossword book have?
Most crossword books run 50 to 100 puzzles, each with its clue list and a solution. Large-print books trend fewer but bigger, since the clues are the body copy and need room to print at a readable size.
How many puzzles should a word search book have?
Most word search books run 40 to 100 puzzles, each with an answer key. Around 80 puzzles at a large-print size is a common, well-reviewed length that still prints at a comfortable page count.
How much does a children’s book illustrator cost?
For a full 32-page picture book, most professional US illustrators charge $2,500 to $7,000, or about $75 to $450 a page. The range is driven by the illustrator’s experience, how many pages are full spreads rather than spot art, and whether the fee buys the copyright or only a licence.
How much does a personalised children’s book cost?
A digital personalised book starts at $9.99. A printed hardcover ($49) and the premium gift edition ($69) are coming soon. You start every book free and preview its opening pages, and only pay to get the full book when you decide to keep it.
Is Once Books free?
You can start any book and preview its opening pages for free, with nothing charged up front. You pay once, only when you want to unlock the full book and download the print-ready PDF. The browser puzzle tools are free with no sign-up.
Should a journal interior be bleed or no-bleed?
No-bleed for a normal lined, dot grid or planner interior: the rules sit inside the margins and nothing touches the page edge. Use bleed only when a design deliberately runs colour or an image all the way to the trim.
Should I make a dated or an undated planner?
Make both from one project. A dated planner sells for a few months before its year and is obsolete after it; an undated planner sells all year and never expires, but buyers write in every date. In Publisher Studio the same layout compiles either way with one switch.
Should my planner be daily, weekly or monthly?
Weekly is the most popular and the easiest to sell: a week to a spread balances detail against page count. Pick daily for hour-by-hour readers, and expect a quarterly book. Pick monthly for a light, cheap, evergreen planner.
What age are the books for?
Once Books makes picture books for young children, roughly toddler through early primary. You pick an age band when you create a book, which tunes the reading level and how much text sits on each page.
What are the margins and gutter for a KDP puzzle book?
Keep at least a 0.25 inch outside margin (more is safer for puzzles), and set the inside gutter by page count: about 0.375 inch up to 150 pages, 0.5 inch from 151 to 300 pages, and larger above that.
What is Once Books?

What is the difference between isometric and orthographic drawings?
An isometric drawing shows a solid in 3D on one picture, with the three axes at equal 120 degree angles, so you see the top, front and side at once. An orthographic drawing splits the same solid into separate flat views, usually a plan and two elevations, each looked at square on.
What size should a KDP crossword book be?
The most popular crossword trims are 6 by 9 inches for a standard book and 8.5 by 11 inches for large print. Large print sells well because, by default, the clue text stays at 14pt or above on a large-print trim, which is easy to read.
