Should a journal interior be bleed or no-bleed?
Updated 22 September 2026
No-bleed for a normal lined, dot grid or planner interior: the rules sit inside the margins and nothing touches the page edge. Use bleed only when a design deliberately runs colour or an image all the way to the trim.
A no-bleed interior keeps all the ink inside the safe area, away from the trimmed edge. That is what a ruling, a grid or a planner spread wants, and it is the setting KDP expects for most low-content books. Ink that strays into the margin is the single most common reason an upload is rejected.
Publisher Studio draws every page inside the safe area by construction and tests it on four trims, so a plain interior is no-bleed and passes. A bleed edition is only for a deliberate design that runs a colour block or an image out to the paper edge.
