## How to make a Tents and Trees puzzle

1. Pick a difficulty. Choose a board. Harder grades are bigger with more trees, so the chains of deduction run longer.
2. Generate the puzzle. Press Generate puzzle. You get a fresh board, proved to have exactly one answer.
3. Print the two pages. Press Print / save PDF. You get two pages: the puzzle on page one and its answer on page two.

## How to solve a tents and trees

Pitch one tent beside every tree, pairing them one to one, so that no two tents touch even at a corner and the numbers beside each row and column count the tents in it.

### The method

1. Cross out the zeros first. A row or column numbered 0 has no tents in it at all. That is free information and it usually settles a few trees straight away, because it leaves them only one free square.
2. Find the trees with one square left. A tree with only one square beside it that is still in play must use it. Place that tent, then immediately rule out all eight squares around it, including the diagonals.
3. Count the space in each line. When a line needs as many tents as it has usable squares left, every one of them is a tent. The same the other way: when a line already has its number, the rest of it is out.
4. Remember the pairing goes both ways. It is not enough for every tent to have a tree beside it. Each tree needs its OWN tent, so if two trees can only share one square between them, something earlier is wrong.

**The one rule people get wrong**

Tents never touch, and that includes corner to corner. Trees have no such rule and may touch each other freely.

**What the answer page shows**

The finished camp is printed at the back.

**How the grades differ**

Bigger boards with more trees, which measurably about doubles the chain of deductions a grade at a time.

**Good for**

Solvers who like a puzzle that is mostly ruling things out.

## Questions

**What is Tents and Trees?**

Tents and Trees is a logic puzzle. You pitch one tent beside every tree so that each tree is paired with exactly one tent directly above, below, left or right of it. Tents may never touch each other, not even at a corner, and the numbers beside each row and column say how many tents that line contains.

**Is this Tents and Trees generator free?**

Yes. Pick a difficulty, generate a puzzle and print it with its answer, with no sign-up and no watermark. It is free for classroom, home and personal use.

**How do I start solving one?**

Start with the zeros: a row or column numbered 0 has no tents at all, so every cell in it is out. Then look for trees with only one free square beside them, and for lines where the number equals the free space left. Each tent you place rules out all eight squares around it, which is usually what breaks the next line open.

**Do tents really not touch diagonally?**

No, they do not. This is the rule people most often get wrong. A tent blocks all eight squares around it, including the four corners, so two tents can never sit diagonally adjacent. Trees have no such rule and may touch each other freely.

**Does every puzzle have one solution?**

Yes. A board can look perfectly reasonable and still have two answers, which makes the printed solution wrong rather than merely hard. Every puzzle here is checked by the same solver our Publisher Studio uses, so the trees and the numbers fix exactly one placement.

**What size are the pages?**

The free tool prints at 8.25 by 11 inches, a popular large-print size. Our Publisher Studio will export the same book at any KDP trim, from 5.06 by 7.81 up to 8.27 by 11.69, as a print-ready 300 DPI interior.
