## How to make a maze

1. Pick a shape and a size. Square is the familiar one. Hexagons give every junction more ways to be wrong, a circular maze is solved from the rim inward, and a picture shape fills a heart, a star or a crescent moon. Sizes run from a 7 by 7 grid for a three-year-old to a 40 by 40 for an adult.
2. Set how hard it should be. Difficulty picks the corridor texture and the start and finish placement. You can also open up the dead ends for a small child, hide stars the route has to collect, or choose the corridor style yourself.
3. Print the two pages. Press Print. You get the maze on page one and the solved route on page two, sized for clean printing at 8.25 by 11 inches or saving as a PDF.

## The five shapes, and who each one is for

**Square**

The maze everyone pictures. Four ways out of every junction, so it reads quickly and prints cleanly at any size. Start here.

**Hexagonal**

Six ways out of every cell instead of four, so a hexagonal maze of the same size is harder, because every junction offers more ways to be wrong. It also looks unlike anything else on the shelf.

**Triangular**

Three ways out, so junctions are rare and the corridors run strongly diagonal. A distinctive page rather than a harder one.

**Circular**

Rings cut into wedges, solved from the rim in to the middle. The rings subdivide outward so the outer corridors stay a readable width instead of becoming caverns.

**Picture shape**

The maze fills a silhouette: a heart, a star, a crescent moon, a cat. The shape is the selling image, which is why these are the ones that get shared.

## Questions

**Is this maze generator free?**

Yes. Pick a shape and a difficulty, generate a maze and print it with its answer, with no sign-up and no watermark. It is free for classroom, home and personal use.

**Does every maze have exactly one way through?**

Yes, unless you open up the dead ends. A maze is carved as a spanning tree, which means every square is reachable and exactly one route joins any two of them. Turn on "some loops" or "no dead ends" and the maze gains shortcuts. It then has one shortest route, which is what the answer page draws.

**How do I know the answer page is right?**

The route is worked out from the maze itself by searching it, not drawn alongside it by hand. So the answer cannot disagree with the maze it answers. That is also why mazes are the one puzzle whose key is provably correct rather than carefully checked.

**What makes a maze hard?**

Not size on its own. A big grid whose solution runs down one edge is an easy page. What matters is how far the route travels across the grid and how deep the wrong turns go. A mistake that dead-ends after two squares costs nothing; one that wanders fifty squares costs a lot. The generator measures both and tells you when a maze reads easier than the grade you picked.

**Which shape should I choose for young children?**

A square maze at tiny or small, with the dead ends opened up and the guide grid on. That makes a maze a four-year-old can wander through without getting stuck, which is the point at that age. Chunky walls make it easier still to follow with a crayon.

**Can I sell maze books I make with a generator?**

The free tool makes one maze at a time for personal and classroom use. To make a book you can sell on Amazon KDP, our Publisher Studio generates hundreds of graded mazes in one shape, at any KDP trim, as a print-ready 300 DPI interior PDF and a matching solutions PDF.
