# Free printable Tents and Trees with answers

Tents and Trees is a logic puzzle: pitch one tent beside every tree, pair them one to one, never let two tents touch even at a corner, and match the numbers beside each row and column. Two rules and a count, and a surprising amount follows.

## By size

Board size is what makes a Tents and Trees harder, and measurably so: each grade needs about twice the search effort of the one below it. Start small and work up.

- [Easy Tents and Trees](https://www.oncebooks.com/tents/easy) — Free printable easy Tents and Trees with answers. A small board with few trees, so most tents are forced. Print with the answer. No sign-up.
- [Medium Tents and Trees](https://www.oncebooks.com/tents/medium) — Free printable medium Tents and Trees with answers. A bigger board where the row and column numbers do more of the work.
- [Hard Tents and Trees](https://www.oncebooks.com/tents/hard) — Free printable hard Tents and Trees with answers. A 10 by 10 where the chains of deduction run several steps.
- [Extreme Tents and Trees](https://www.oncebooks.com/tents/extreme) — Free printable extreme Tents and Trees with answers. A large board for solvers who want a long sitting.
- [Evil Tents and Trees](https://www.oncebooks.com/tents/evil) — Free printable evil Tents and Trees with answers. The biggest board we print, and the longest chains. Still exactly one answer.

## By audience

The rule is a picture rather than a sum, which is why this one suits children and new solvers better than most logic puzzles.

- [Tents and Trees for kids](https://www.oncebooks.com/tents/for-kids) — Free printable Tents and Trees for kids with answers. Small boards, few trees, and a rule a child can picture.
- [Tents and Trees for beginners](https://www.oncebooks.com/tents/for-beginners) — Free printable Tents and Trees for beginners with answers. Learn the two rules on a small board, with the answer on page two.
- [Large print Tents and Trees](https://www.oncebooks.com/tents/large-print) — Free printable large print Tents and Trees with answers. A small board printed big, for easy reading. No sign-up.

## One answer, every time

This is the guarantee that is hard to make and easy to skip, and the reason most free Tents and Trees are not worth printing. A board can look perfectly reasonable and still have two answers, which does not make it harder, it makes the printed solution wrong. Every puzzle here is checked by the same solver our Publisher Studio uses, so the trees and the numbers fix exactly one placement. The answer prints at the back.

## How to solve a tents and trees

Pitch one tent beside every tree, pairing them one to one, so that no two tents touch even at a corner and the numbers beside each row and column count the tents in it.

### The method

1. Cross out the zeros first. A row or column numbered 0 has no tents in it at all. That is free information and it usually settles a few trees straight away, because it leaves them only one free square.
2. Find the trees with one square left. A tree with only one square beside it that is still in play must use it. Place that tent, then immediately rule out all eight squares around it, including the diagonals.
3. Count the space in each line. When a line needs as many tents as it has usable squares left, every one of them is a tent. The same the other way: when a line already has its number, the rest of it is out.
4. Remember the pairing goes both ways. It is not enough for every tent to have a tree beside it. Each tree needs its OWN tent, so if two trees can only share one square between them, something earlier is wrong.

**The one rule people get wrong**

Tents never touch, and that includes corner to corner. Trees have no such rule and may touch each other freely.

**What the answer page shows**

The finished camp is printed at the back.

**How the grades differ**

Bigger boards with more trees, which measurably about doubles the chain of deductions a grade at a time.

**Good for**

Solvers who like a puzzle that is mostly ruling things out.
