# Hexagonal mazes

A hexagonal maze replaces the grid of squares with a honeycomb, so corridors run in six directions instead of four. The extra choices at every junction are what make it harder than a square maze of the same size, and the slanted paths are what make it look unlike anything else on the shelf.

## Why six sides is harder than four

In a square maze a junction offers at most three ways on from the one you arrived by. In a hexagonal maze it offers up to five. That is not a small difference once you are forty cells into a route: the number of wrong branches you can take grows with every junction you pass.

The second reason is that your eye has nothing straight to follow. A square maze lets you scan down a column; a honeycomb does not, so you have to trace rather than glance. Solvers who have exhausted square mazes usually find a hexagon the next real step up.

six ways out of every cell

## Hexagonal

A honeycomb of six-sided cells. The corridors run in six directions rather than four, so the paths slant as well as turn.

**How it solves**

With six sides per cell a junction can offer five ways on instead of three, so a hexagonal maze of the same size takes longer than a square one. Your eye also has no straight lines to follow, which is most of why it feels harder.

**Good for**

Adults and older children who have run out of square mazes.

## Questions

**Are these hexagonal mazes free to print?**

Yes. Generate the maze above and print it with its answer, at no cost and with no sign-up. It is free for classroom, home and personal use.

**Is there exactly one way through?**

Yes. The maze is carved as a spanning tree, which means every square is reachable and exactly one route joins any two of them. The answer page draws that route, found by searching the maze itself rather than drawn alongside it.

**Can I make a maze book to sell on KDP?**

Yes. The free tool makes one maze. Publisher Studio generates hundreds of graded mazes in one shape, with an optional how-to-solve page, at any KDP trim, as a print-ready 300 DPI interior and a matching solutions PDF.
