# Cross mazes

A cross maze is four equal arms meeting at a square centre. Because the arms only join through the middle, the route crosses the centre more than once on its way from one arm to another.

## The centre is the only way between the arms

Each of the four arms is a near dead end: a corridor or two runs out into it and comes back. Any path between two arms has to pass through the square in the middle, so the centre carries the traffic of the whole puzzle and the route returns to it again and again.

That makes the cross a good shape for a collecting maze. Put one star at the end of each arm and the solver has to visit all four and keep returning to the middle, which covers the whole shape rather than one corner of it.

four ways out, inside an outline

## Picture shape

A square-grid maze carved to fill a silhouette: a heart, a star, a crescent moon, a cat, a tree.

**How it solves**

It solves like a square maze, but the outline does half the work for you. A corridor that runs into the tip of a star has nowhere to go, so the shape itself rules out whole branches once you learn to read it.

**Good for**

Cards, classroom handouts and anything that has to look like a gift.

## Questions

**Are these cross mazes free to print?**

Yes. Generate the maze above and print it with its answer, at no cost and with no sign-up. It is free for classroom, home and personal use.

**Is there exactly one way through?**

Yes. The maze is carved as a spanning tree, which means every square is reachable and exactly one route joins any two of them. The answer page draws that route, found by searching the maze itself rather than drawn alongside it.

**Can I make a maze book to sell on KDP?**

Yes. The free tool makes one maze. Publisher Studio generates hundreds of graded mazes in one shape, with an optional how-to-solve page, at any KDP trim, as a print-ready 300 DPI interior and a matching solutions PDF.
