# Coding path mazes

A coding path maze turns a maze into a first programming puzzle. The child writes one arrow per square, up, right, down or left, that walks a robot from the start to the finish. The answer page fills the arrows in, worked out from the maze itself so it is always right.

## What a coding maze teaches

Before a child writes code they learn that a plan is a list of steps in order, and that the order matters. A coding maze is the paper version of that idea: the robot does exactly what the arrows say, one square at a time, so a wrong arrow sends it into a wall and the child can see why.

It is the same thinking behind a floor robot like a Bee-Bot, without the robot. Write the sequence, trace it with a finger, and check it against the answer page. A small grid is four or five arrows, which is about right for a four or five year old.

## Only the grid shapes have arrows

Up, right, down and left only mean something on a square grid, so a coding path is offered on square mazes and the picture silhouettes, which are square grids with the corners switched off. A hexagon or a circular maze has no up or down, so those shapes stay plain mazes.

Keep the grid small and the passages gentle for the youngest coders. A tiny or small maze with some loops gives a short sequence and no dead end that makes the robot start over.

four ways out of every junction

## Rectangular

A grid of squares with walls between them, an arrow going in at one corner and an arrow coming out at another.

**How it solves**

Each junction offers at most three ways on from the one you arrived by, so the choices stay countable and a wrong turn is quick to spot. It is the shape everyone pictures, and the one to start a child on.

**Good for**

Everyone. The default, and the easiest to read at any size.

## Questions

**What age is a coding maze for?**

Four to seven, roughly. At the small size the answer is four or five arrows, which suits a child who is just learning that a set of instructions runs in order. Older children can take a bigger grid for a longer sequence.

**Are these coding path mazes free to print?**

Yes. Generate the maze above and print it with its answer, at no cost and with no sign-up. It is free for classroom, home and personal use.

**Is there exactly one way through?**

Not quite, and that is deliberate here. This page opens with the dead ends mostly opened into loops, so a wrong turn rejoins the path instead of stopping. The maze then has one shortest route, which is what the answer page draws. Set Passages to "dead ends" for a maze with exactly one way through.

**Can I make a maze book to sell on KDP?**

Yes. The free tool makes one maze. Publisher Studio generates hundreds of graded mazes in one shape, with an optional how-to-solve page, at any KDP trim, as a print-ready 300 DPI interior and a matching solutions PDF.
