# Free printable mazes with answers

Five shapes, six sizes and a difficulty that is measured rather than guessed. Every maze prints with the solved route on the facing page, and every page you generate is a different maze.

## By shape

The shape decides how a maze solves, not just how it looks. A hexagon gives every cell six sides instead of four, so the same size takes longer; a triangle gives three, so junctions are rare and you spend the time tracing.

- [Square mazes](https://www.oncebooks.com/maze/square) — Free printable square mazes with answers. Pick a size from a 7 by 7 grid to a 40 by 40, print the maze and the solved route. No sign-up.

- [Easter](https://www.oncebooks.com/maze/easter-egg) — An egg maze for a spring party or an egg hunt.

- [Ramadan and Eid](https://www.oncebooks.com/maze/moon) — A crescent moon maze that solves more like a long tunnel than a grid.
- [Diwali and autumn](https://www.oncebooks.com/maze/lantern) — A lantern maze for the festivals of light.

## By age and difficulty

Size matters more than any other setting for a child, and for an adult it is the route length and how deep a wrong turn runs. Both are measured on every page.

- [Easy mazes](https://www.oncebooks.com/maze/easy) — Free printable easy mazes with answers. Small grids with the dead ends opened up, so a wrong turn rejoins the path instead of stopping. No sign-up.

## How each shape solves

four ways out of every junction

### [Rectangular](https://www.oncebooks.com/maze/square)

A grid of squares with walls between them, an arrow going in at one corner and an arrow coming out at another.

**How it solves**

Each junction offers at most three ways on from the one you arrived by, so the choices stay countable and a wrong turn is quick to spot. It is the shape everyone pictures, and the one to start a child on.

**Good for**

Everyone. The default, and the easiest to read at any size.

six ways out of every cell

### [Hexagonal](https://www.oncebooks.com/maze/hexagonal)

A honeycomb of six-sided cells. The corridors run in six directions rather than four, so the paths slant as well as turn.

**How it solves**

With six sides per cell a junction can offer five ways on instead of three, so a hexagonal maze of the same size takes longer than a square one. Your eye also has no straight lines to follow, which is most of why it feels harder.

**Good for**

Adults and older children who have run out of square mazes.

three ways out of every cell

### [Triangular](https://www.oncebooks.com/maze/triangular)

Triangles pointing up and down in alternating rows, so the corridors run diagonally across the page.

**How it solves**

Three sides per cell means junctions are rare: most of the time there is one way on and you follow it. That makes a triangular maze less about choosing and more about tracing, which is a different pleasure rather than a lesser one.

**Good for**

A change of pace, and the most distinctive page in a variety book.

four ways out, but two of them curve

### [Circular](https://www.oncebooks.com/maze/circular)

Concentric rings cut into wedges, with a gap in the outer rim to enter by and a small circle at the middle to reach.

**How it solves**

You are working inward rather than across, so progress is measured in rings rather than distance. The rings subdivide as they go out, which keeps the outer corridors a readable width instead of letting them open into caverns.

**Good for**

Anyone who wants a maze that looks like a labyrinth rather than a grid.

four ways out, inside an outline

### [Picture shape](https://www.oncebooks.com/maze/picture)

A square-grid maze carved to fill a silhouette: a heart, a star, a crescent moon, a cat, a tree.

**How it solves**

It solves like a square maze, but the outline does half the work for you. A corridor that runs into the tip of a star has nowhere to go, so the shape itself rules out whole branches once you learn to read it.

**Good for**

Cards, classroom handouts and anything that has to look like a gift.
