# French ruled paper (Seyes) to print

Seyes ruling is what French schools write on, and it teaches letter height rather than just holding a line. Each 8 mm band carries three light guides 2 mm apart: lower-case letters sit in the bottom one, tall letters reach the top of the band. The vertical lines keep margins and columns straight.

## How to use Seyes (French ruled) paper

The French school ruling: 8 mm bands, each holding three light guide lines 2 mm apart, with vertical lines down the page.

### Step by step

1. Lower-case letters sit in the bottom section. An a, an e or an o fills the 2 mm between the base line and the first guide. That one rule is most of what the ruling teaches.
2. Tall letters reach the top of the band. An l, a b or a capital goes the full 8 mm. A t stops two thirds of the way. The guides mean you can see that rather than judge it.
3. Use the verticals for margins and columns. They are 8 mm apart, so a margin is a whole number of them, and so are the columns of a table or a sum.

**Why the guides are so light**

They are scaffolding, not lines to write on. Printing them at a third of the weight of the main rules means handwriting sits on top of them instead of fighting them.

**Good for**

French handwriting practice, cursive, and anyone learning consistent letter height.
