# What a children’s book illustrator actually costs

For a full 32-page picture book, most professional US illustrators charge $2,500–$7,000 — around $75–$450 a page. Here are the 2026 rates, what moves them, and how to tell a fair quote from a worrying one.

## Why two quotes for the same book differ by $4,000

Almost always one of three things, and none of them is visible in the headline number.

- **Spreads versus spot art.** A full-bleed double-page illustration is several times the work of a small corner drawing. “32 pages” can mean fifteen spreads or five and a lot of white.
- **Revision rounds.** Two or three are normal. Unlimited is not, and a quote without a number here is a quote that will grow.
- **Rights.** A work-for-hire fee that assigns you the copyright costs more than a licence to print one edition. This is the difference authors most often discover late.

## The number that should make you ask questions

Under roughly **$1,500** for a full 32-page book, the arithmetic stops working: that is about $45 a page for original artwork, revisions and print-ready files.
