# Why AI picture books drift — and how we stop it

Ask any image model to draw “a small bear with a lantern” twice and you get two different bears. That is not a bug you can prompt your way out of — image models are stateless. Each page is a fresh guess, so by page four the hero from page one is gone: new face, new fur, new proportions.

## The fix is memory the model doesn’t have

## Questions parents ask

**Can't I just tell the AI to keep the character the same?**

No. Image models are stateless — each page is generated independently, so a prompt alone cannot carry a face from one page to the next. Consistency needs approved reference images re-supplied on every page, not a cleverer prompt.

**Does the whole book share one art style?**

Yes. The style is chosen once and frozen onto the entire book, so page one and page sixteen read as the work of a single illustrator rather than being re-invented page by page.
