KDP [spine width](https://www.oncebooks.com/glossary#spine-width) is your page count multiplied by the thickness of one page: 0.002252 inch for white paper, 0.0025 for cream and 0.002347 for premium colour. The full-wrap cover is then 0.125 inch of bleed, plus the back cover, plus the spine, plus the front cover, plus another 0.125 inch. Its height is the trim height plus 0.25 inch. A 120-page, 8.5 by 11 book on white paper has a 0.2702 inch spine and a 17.5202 by 11.25 inch cover.

Everything else on this page is those two formulas applied carefully. The numbers come from our print engine, which encodes the multipliers behind KDP's cover calculator. KDP updates its guidance from time to time, so cross-check against the calculator before a big run.

## How do you calculate KDP spine width?

Spine width is page count × paper thickness per page, with no fixed allowance added for the cover board or glue. The thickness depends only on paper and ink, not on trim size, so a 6 by 9 book and an 8.5 by 11 book with the same page count have the same spine.

| Paper and ink | Thickness per page (inch) | Spine for 100 pages |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Black ink, white paper | 0.002252 | 0.2252 inch |
| Black ink, cream paper | 0.0025 | 0.25 inch |
| Premium colour | 0.002347 | 0.2347 inch |
| Standard colour | 0.002252 | 0.2252 inch |

Our engine treats standard colour as the same white stock black ink prints on, which is why those two rows match. KDP also lists a groundwood paper for some black-ink books. Our engine doesn't model it, so if you use it, read the spine width from KDP's calculator.

Use the page count KDP will print, which is always even. If KDP's previewer shows a different count from yours, build to KDP's.

## How wide is a full-wrap KDP cover?

A KDP paperback cover is a single PDF: back cover on the left, spine in the middle, front cover on the right. KDP adds [bleed](https://www.oncebooks.com/glossary#bleed) of 0.125 inch on the top, bottom and both outside edges, and none at the folds.

- **Cover width** = 0.125 + trim width + spine + trim width + 0.125
- **Cover height** = 0.125 + trim height + 0.125

The front and back panels are each exactly your trim width. The bleed gets cut off, so nothing you need to read should sit in that outer 0.125 inch, and KDP asks for anything that should print to the edge to extend into it.

## What do three real covers measure?

Here are three common books worked through the same arithmetic, rounded to four decimal places as our engine does.

**1. A 120-page, 8.5 by 11 puzzle book on white paper**

- Spine: 120 × 0.002252 = 0.27024, so **0.2702 inch**
- Cover: (0.125 + 8.5 + 0.2702 + 8.5 + 0.125) wide by (0.125 + 11 + 0.125) tall = **17.5202 by 11.25 inches**
- Spine text: allowed, because 120 pages is comfortably past KDP's 79-page line, though the spine is still under a third of an inch

**2. A 200-page, 6 by 9 novel on cream paper**

- Spine: 200 × 0.0025 = **0.5 inch**
- Cover: (0.125 + 6 + 0.5 + 6 + 0.125) wide by (0.125 + 9 + 0.125) tall = **12.75 by 9.25 inches**
- Spine text: allowed, with a roomy 0.375 inch left between the fold margins

**3. A 24-page, 8.5 by 8.5 picture book in premium colour**

- Spine: 24 × 0.002347 = 0.056328, so **0.0563 inch**
- Cover: (0.125 + 8.5 + 0.0563 + 8.5 + 0.125) wide by (0.125 + 8.5 + 0.125) tall = **17.3063 by 8.75 inches**
- Spine text: not allowed, because 24 pages is well under the threshold

| Book | Spine | Cover width | Cover height |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| 120 pages, 8.5 × 11, white | 0.2702 in | 17.5202 in | 11.25 in |
| 200 pages, 6 × 9, cream | 0.5 in | 12.75 in | 9.25 in |
| 24 pages, 8.5 × 8.5, premium colour | 0.0563 in | 17.3063 in | 8.75 in |

## When can you put text on the spine?

KDP prints spine text from 79 pages up, which is the threshold our calculator uses. Page counts are always even once bound, so the practical line sits between 78 and 80 pages. On white paper, 78 pages gives a 0.1757 inch spine that must stay blank, while 80 pages gives 0.1802 inch and you can print on it.

Even when text is allowed, it can't run edge to edge. KDP wants at least 0.0625 inch between spine text and each side of the spine, because the fold can shift slightly in binding. On the 120-page book above, that leaves 0.2702 − (2 × 0.0625) = **0.1452 inch** for the text itself, a bit over a seventh of an inch. That's enough for one line of a short title, and not much more.

If your book is close to 80 pages and you want a titled spine, adding a few pages of notes or extra puzzles is often easier than fighting a spine that's too thin to print on.

## What mistakes break a KDP cover?

Most cover problems come down to a size mismatch between the cover file and what KDP expects for your interior. These are the ones to check first.

**Using the trim size instead of trim plus bleed.** A cover built at 17.2702 by 11 inches for the 120-page example is 0.25 inch short on each axis. Anything meant to reach the edge will leave a white sliver after cutting.

**Building to an odd page count.** A bound book has an even number of pages, so a 101-page interior prints as 102. Our engine works the spine from 102 pages (0.2297 inch on white paper), not from 101 (0.2275 inch). The difference is small, but it shifts every panel edge, so build to the even count, not your file's last page number.

**Laying out on white, printing on cream.** The 120-page example is 0.2702 inch on white and 0.3 inch on cream. That 0.0298 inch gap is about three quarters of a millimetre, enough to push spine text onto a fold. If you change paper, rebuild the cover.

**Rebuilding the interior without rebuilding the cover.** Adding 20 puzzle pages to a 120-page white-paper book widens the spine by 20 × 0.002252 = 0.045 inch. Make the cover the last file you export.

**Covering the barcode area.** KDP prints its barcode onto the back cover in a fixed box. The template from KDP's cover calculator marks it, so keep text and key art out of it.

**Hardcover numbers on a paperback, or the reverse.** A hardcover's case wraps around boards and uses different dimensions. Our engine won't guess a hardcover spine, because KDP publishes it only through its calculator. Take it from there.

## Does Publisher Studio make the cover for you?

Yes, for paperbacks. Publisher Studio exports a wraparound cover PDF alongside the [interior PDF](https://www.oncebooks.com/glossary#interior-pdf), laid out with exactly these formulas for your trim, paper and page count. It adds spine text only when the book is thick enough, keeps that text 0.0625 inch clear of each fold, and leaves the barcode area blank. The design is deliberately plain: your title and subtitle over a solid colour. Want illustrated art? Build it yourself, or brief a designer, to the same dimensions.

It won't make a hardcover cover, for the reason above. It also can't stop you uploading an old cover after you change the book, so export the cover again whenever the page count or paper changes.

The studio has a maker for each puzzle type: [word search](https://www.oncebooks.com/kdp-word-search-maker), [sudoku](https://www.oncebooks.com/kdp-sudoku-maker), [crossword](https://www.oncebooks.com/kdp-crossword-maker) and [spatial puzzles](https://www.oncebooks.com/kdp-spatial-puzzle-maker). If you're still working out the interior, the [KDP sudoku interior specs](https://www.oncebooks.com/blog/kdp-sudoku-interior-specs) cover margins and gutter. ## Questions parents ask

**How do I calculate spine width for a KDP paperback?**

Multiply your page count by the thickness of one page of your paper. For black ink on white paper that's 0.002252 inch per page, so a 120-page book has a 0.2702 inch spine. Cream paper is 0.0025 inch per page and premium colour is 0.002347.

**What size should my KDP paperback cover be?**

Width is 0.125 inch bleed, plus the trim width twice, plus the spine, plus another 0.125 inch bleed. Height is the trim height plus 0.25 inch. A 120-page 8.5 by 11 book on white paper needs a cover 17.5202 by 11.25 inches.

**How many pages do you need for text on a KDP spine?**

KDP prints spine text from 79 pages up. Because a bound book always has an even page count, in practice that means 80 pages or more, with at least 0.0625 inch clear between the text and each fold.

**Is cream paper thicker than white on KDP?**

Yes. Cream is 0.0025 inch per page against 0.002252 for white, about 11% thicker. A 120-page book's spine is 0.3 inch on cream and 0.2702 inch on white, so a cover built for one paper won't fit the other.
