Low-content publishing is the corner of Amazon KDP where the value is in the format, not the prose: journals, planners, log books and puzzle books. Word search sits near the top of that list. The demand is evergreen, the audience is broad (kids, adults, seniors, classrooms), and a good book is mostly a matter of a clear niche and a clean interior.

This guide walks the whole path, from picking a theme to uploading a [print-ready](https://www.oncebooks.com/glossary#print-ready) file. You can make your first puzzle for free in a browser, and you'll only pay when you're ready to build a full book.

## What "low-content" actually means here

A [low-content book](https://www.oncebooks.com/glossary#low-content-book) has little or no written manuscript. The reader does the work: they solve the puzzles. That changes what you're producing. You're not writing chapters, you're laying out puzzles and answer keys onto pages sized for print, at a [KDP trim size](https://www.oncebooks.com/glossary#kdp-trim-size) that passes review.

A word search book is only as good as its weakest puzzle. Duplicated grids, words that never got placed, or a cramped, hard-to-read layout are the common reasons for poor reviews. The generation step below is where you avoid them.

## Step 1: pick a niche, not just a theme

"Word search" is far too broad to rank or sell. A niche is a theme plus an audience: large-print animals for seniors, Bible word search for youth groups, kitchen and cooking terms, 50 US states, Christmas words for classrooms. Pick something specific enough that the book is obviously for one person.

For 100 theme ideas and how to research demand, see our guide to [word search book niches that sell](https://www.oncebooks.com/blog/word-search-book-niches-that-sell).

## Step 2: make the puzzles

Try the [free word search generator](https://www.oncebooks.com/tools/word-search-generator) first. Type a title and a word list, press generate, and you get a printable puzzle and its [answer key](https://www.oncebooks.com/glossary#answer-key) on two pages. It's the same engine our studio uses, so what you see is what a book page will look like.

A whole book needs more than one puzzle. When you are ready, the [KDP word-search maker](https://www.oncebooks.com/kdp-word-search-maker) generates hundreds of puzzles from a word bank, de-duplicates them so no two grids repeat, and builds the answer section for you. You unlock a project once and export it as many times as you like.

## Step 3: get the interior specs right

This is where most first books fail review. Every KDP paperback needs the correct margins, a [gutter margin](https://www.oncebooks.com/glossary#gutter-margin) that grows with page count, and, if your art runs to the page edge, [bleed](https://www.oncebooks.com/glossary#bleed). Large print is not a nice-to-have in this niche, it is what most buyers are searching for.

We wrote the exact numbers up in [KDP word search interior specs](https://www.oncebooks.com/blog/kdp-word-search-interior-specs). The short version: pick a common trim like 8.5 by 11 inches for large print, keep at least a quarter-inch outer margin (a half inch reads better around a grid), and let the tool size the gutter for your page count.

## Step 4: pair every puzzle with an answer key

A book of unsolvable puzzles gets returned. Every puzzle needs a matching answer key, and the answers need to be easy to check. Our generator marks each hidden word in the solution, either a loop around the word or a shaded highlight, so a reader can scan the answers in seconds. See [how to make a word search with a print-ready answer key](https://www.oncebooks.com/blog/word-search-with-a-print-ready-answer-key) for the layout choices that keep the answer section readable.

## Step 5: make a cover and set up the listing

The studio exports a print-ready wraparound cover PDF alongside the [interior PDF](https://www.oncebooks.com/glossary#interior-pdf): back, spine and front on one sheet, sized to your page count, with your title set over a solid colour. That built-in cover is deliberately plain, and for this niche a simple, high-contrast title over a themed background is enough, so you do not need a designer. If you would rather build your own, KDP's cover calculator gives you the exact wrap dimensions for your page count.

For the listing itself, write a title and subtitle that name the niche and the format ("Large Print Animal Word Search for Adults, 80 Puzzles"), fill the seven keyword slots with phrases a buyer would type, and choose two browse categories.

## Step 6: understand the maths

KDP pays a royalty after printing costs. For a black-and-white paperback, printing is priced per page, so a large-print book with fewer, roomier pages can be more profitable than a cramped one. Price in the range buyers expect for the niche, usually a few dollars, and let the catalogue, not any single title, do the earning over time.

## A realistic first project

Make one free puzzle to see the output. Pick a specific niche. Generate around 80 puzzles with answer keys in the studio, export the interior at a large-print trim, make a simple cover, and upload. Then do it again for the next niche. The compounding comes from a shelf of focused books, each easy to find because it is clearly for one reader.

## Questions parents ask

**Do word search books sell on Amazon KDP?**

Yes. Word search is one of the steadiest low-content niches on KDP, with year-round demand from adults, seniors and classrooms. It is competitive, so a specific theme and a clean, large-print interior matter more than volume.

**How many puzzles should a word search book have?**

Most word search books run 40 to 100 puzzles, each with an answer key. Around 80 puzzles at a large-print size is a common, well-reviewed length that still prints at a comfortable page count.

**Do I need to be able to draw or design to publish one?**

No. The interior is generated from your word lists, and the cover can be made with a simple template. You need a niche, a word list per puzzle and a print-ready interior PDF, not illustration skills.
