Answer

# How much does a children’s book illustrator cost?

Updated 22 September 2026

For a full 32-page picture book, most professional US illustrators charge $2,500 to $7,000, or about $75 to $450 a page. The range is driven by the illustrator’s experience, how many pages are full spreads rather than spot art, and whether the fee buys the copyright or only a licence.

Two quotes for the same book can differ by thousands, and the headline number rarely shows why. The three things that move it most are how many illustrations are full spreads, how many revision rounds are included, and whether you are buying the copyright outright or a licence to print one edition. A quote is not comparable to another until you know all three.
