Answer

# How many pages should a journal have?

Updated 22 September 2026

Most journals run 100 to 200 pages. Print-on-demand services bind from 24 pages up (KDP’s window is 24 to 828), and the binding margin widens at 151 and 301 pages, so 120 pages is a common choice that keeps the gutter at its narrowest.

Page count sets three things at once: the per-page print cost a service deducts from every sale, the [gutter margin](https://www.oncebooks.com/glossary#gutter-margin) the interior must carry, and the spine width the cover is sized to. A 120-page lined journal is the sweet spot for all three. Above 150 pages the gutter steps up, and above 300 it steps up again.

In [Publisher Studio](https://www.oncebooks.com/journal-maker) you set the body page count and the compiler adds the title page and evens the total, then sizes the gutter and the cover spine to the real count.
