# Do low-content books need an ISBN?

No. You do not need an ISBN to publish a low-content book on Amazon KDP. Low-content books are not eligible for KDP free ISBN, so if you want one for wider distribution you buy your own, but it is optional.

A [low-content book](https://www.oncebooks.com/glossary#low-content-book) can go live on KDP without an ISBN: Amazon gives it an internal identifier for sale on its own store. What KDP does not do for low-content titles is hand out its free ISBN, which is why so many journals and planners publish without one.

If you plan to sell the same book through other shops or a wholesaler, an ISBN you own makes that cleaner, and you can add it in the export step. For an Amazon-only listing it is a cost you can skip. Either way it does not change the interior, so it is a decision you can leave until you publish.
